Community Ministries
Current Activities:
Seeking Food Kitchen Volunteers For many years, Prince of Peace has been part of a mission to field a team of congregants to work at the Redeemer Lutheran Community Food Kitchen in downtown Atlanta. On the first Tuesday of each month, we send one of two teams to Redeemer and fulfill that mission. Through the years, we have slowly lost a number of volunteers for this important ministry. If you can give six Tuesday mornings a year to help those who Christ called, “the very least of these,” please help us out! We are in need of several workers and a Captain for Team Care. We are also in need of a driver to help pick up bread on an occasional Monday. Please see Dan Powers, Jeanne Wieckert or Dennis Wieckert if you can help us out
SAVE THE DATE: TASTE OF HABITAT The Fourth Annual Taste of Habitat will be on Friday, September 26, 2008! Who will be this years’ Celebrity Chefs? It could be you! As one of the Celebrity Chefs, you will be asked to bring a large bowl or tray (enough for about 120 spoon-sized tastes or quarter-sized appetizers, desserts, salads or entrees). This event is a fundraiser for this years’ Habitat Home. Pick up an application from Jeanne Wieckert or from her mailbox. Tickets to attend the Taste of Habitat event will go on sale in the fall.
Sponsorship forms are currently available at platinum ($1000), gold ($500) and silver ($200) levels. Platinum sponsors will receive tickets and be featured in the video display and program. Gold sponsors will receive 20 tickets to the event and be featured in the program. Silver sponsors will receive 8 tickets and be featured in the program. All sponsorships will be supporting our local Habitat Build. If you know of any company or group that would be interested in sponsoring our Taste of Habitat, please pick up a sponsorship form!

The Community Ministries Team at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church seeks to provide opportunities for each member to engage in ministries with the purpose of helping people in need within our community and the world. The activities are as close to home as North Fulton Community Charities and North Central Georgia Affiliate of Habitat for Humanity and as far-reaching as the Lutheran World Relief. We hope to provide opportunities to serve while fitting into every member's available time, talents and financial abilities. The support from Prince of Peace members continues to be phenomenal! Among our many opportunities throughout the year, the following have been especially successful:
Angel Tree. Each year at Christmas, we provide two gifts each for 55 children whose names were provided by the prison chaplains with the Prison Ministry Program. These children receive both a clothing item and a toy or fun item labeled from their parent who is in prison. In addition, we also purchase gifts and deliver to the North Fulton Community Charities.
Atlanta Hunger Walk. Our church continues to be one of the top fund raising churches (second this year) among the 57 Lutheran Churches walking in the event. These funds are used by the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Lutheran Services of Georgia.
Family Haven Women's Shelter. Family Haven provides emergency shelter, crisis intervention and comprehensive support services for victims of domestic violence. Household items, clothing and toys that are brought to church are taken to the Family Haven Thrift Store on and on-going basis to provide support to the local shelter. Note: The thrift store is temporarily closed and and we are currenty taking household items to NFCC or LSG. We collect the items at the bottom of the stairway downstairs.
Habitat for Humanity. Through a cooperative effort of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, the Lutheran Coalition for Habitat for Humanity and the North Central Georgia and Cobb County Habitat for Humanity Affiliates, we build at least one home (last year two, this year one) for families each year. Members of the Prince of Peace work on the homes and those unable to lift and bend, provided on-site meals for the workers. See our on-line Calendar for up-coming build dates.
Lutheran Services of Georgia. Prince of Peace has supported Lutheran Services of Georgia (LSG) in several ways over this past year. 80% of the funds our church raised in the Hunger Walk were distributed through LSG. We also donate blankets, apartment kits and clothing to the LSG Refugee Resettlement programs in addition to supporting their Art Auction fundraiser.
Lutheran World Relief. Lutheran World Relief works to help people grow food, improve health, strengthen communities, end conflict, build livelihoods and recover from disasters. We support the world-wide relief efforts of our larger church body through publicity efforts, monetary donations and the Free Trade Coffee and Handicraft Sales.
North Fulton Community Charities. Prince of Peach continues to collect needed food items for use by NFCC. The food collection cart has a permanent place in the narthex and is taken to NFCC on a weekly basis. We also offer a supplemental program offering staple food items available for sale in the narthex. These items can be purchased and contributed to the NFCC food cart. In addition to food items, NFCC can also use financial donations which they use to assist families for utilities, rent and other emergency items. NFCC accepts donations on-line at www.nfcchelp.org.
Other Food Ministries.. The Food Ministry also assists Lutheran Church of the Redeemer distribute food to those in need. Prince of Peace has a number of volunteer drivers who pick up bakery items from two grocery stores and transport the food to Lutheran Church of the Redeemer every Monday. Teams of volunteers alternate serving at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer Food Kitchen on the first Tuesday each month
